Lawyer Position in Indigenous Justice

About Us
The BC First Nations Justice Council is a rapidly growing organization dedicated to reducing the overrepresentation of Indigenous people in the criminal justice system and supporting Nations as they move towards sovereignty over justice.
We currently have 10 Indigenous Justice Centres (IJC) across British Columbia, serving 204 First Nations. Our team works closely with Indigenous clients to help them access legal supports and social services that address housing, employment, physical and mental health, and wellness challenges.
Job Description
We are seeking a Staff Lawyer to join our team at the Prince Rupert IJC. As a key member of our team, you will work closely with Indigenous clients to provide legal representation for child protection and criminal matters.
Your primary focus will be on child protection, while your secondary focus will be on criminal justice matters. You will be responsible for providing legal representation to clients who would not otherwise have access to legal support, advocating on their behalf for diversion from the formal court system, and working with communities and service providers to ensure clients receive culturally safe and Indigenized programs and services.
Requirements
To be successful in this role, you must be a member of the Law Society of British Columbia in good standing with 1-5 years' experience in litigation, preferably in child protection with some criminal background experience.
You should also possess knowledge of local and urban Indigenous cultures, the structure and procedures of Canada's Criminal Justice System, including the Criminal Code and Youth Criminal Justice Act, and the structure and procedures of British Columbia's child protection system.
What We Offer
We offer a competitive salary range of $90,000 - $150,000, commensurate with education and experience, as well as an extended benefits package that includes health and dental, personal days, paid vacation, and RRSP/TFSA savings plans.
Location and Hours
This full-time position is based in Prince Rupert, BC, with option for 75% in-office minimum work arrangement available. The regular hours of work are Monday to Friday, 35 hours per week.
