Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Public Health Technologist to join our team at the BCCDC Labs. As a key member of our Virology team, you will play a critical role in testing clinical and other specimens using tissue culture and nucleic acid techniques.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Participate in day-to-day work activities in Virology, testing clinical and other specimens using tissue culture and nucleic acid techniques.
  • Identify viruses using fluorescent microscopy, rapid immunoassays, shell vial, and traditional cell culture methods.
  • Prepare stock solutions and reagents following standard operating procedures.
  • Perform cell culturing techniques for virus propagation and maintenance of continuous cell lines, and semi-automatic nucleic acid extraction and detection by real-time PCR.
  • Respond to requests and inquiries for all referred-in tests, seeking direction as required from the Technical Coordinator, Team Lead, Site Supervisor, Laboratory Operations Manager, or Program Head/Medical Microbiologist.
  • Perform all related functions required for the production of final reports, including preparing, testing, and assessing quality control results prior to release of clinical results, troubleshooting specimen adequacy, and preparing dilutions as required according to established procedures.

Requirements:

  • Certification with the Canadian Society for Medical Laboratory Science (CSMLS).
  • One (1) year of recent, related experience, including experience in a research-based laboratory or an equivalent combination of education, training, and recent related experience.
