Laboratory Clerk

We are seeking a highly organized and detail-oriented Laboratory Clerk to join our team at the Provincial Health Services Authority. As a Laboratory Clerk, you will play a critical role in supporting the day-to-day operations of our laboratory, ensuring the smooth flow of patient samples and test results.
Key Responsibilities- Perform data entry functions, including receiving, sorting, and verifying specimens against requisitions and physicians' orders.
- Accession specimens, provide clerical and receptionist duties, and answer telephone calls.
- Receives and registers patients, obtaining necessary information for patient data and test entry into the Laboratory Information System.
- Explains sample collection procedures to patients and answers related questions.
- Receives, processes, and prepares patient samples in accordance with established procedures.
- Prioritizes workflow and prepares samples for send-out in accordance with transportation regulations and procedures.
- Distributes, files, retrieves, and disposes of laboratory specimens, slides, and blocks.
- Mails and distributes patient reports as required.
- Maintains laboratory inventory and supplies, including counting, stocking, and alerting leaders when volume is low.
- Cleans and disinfects work areas as per established procedure.
- Assists with the orientation of new department staff as directed.
- Participates in departmental continuous quality improvement activities and provides input to problem-solve and improve service and processes.
- Grade 12, medical terminology, and two (2) years' recent related experience; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
- Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
- Able to deal with others effectively.
- Ability to operate related equipment.
- Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position.
- Ability to organize work.
- Ability to type at 45 w.p.m.
