Vision Loss Rehabilitation Canada is a leading health services organization dedicated to empowering individuals who are blind or partially sighted across the country. Our certified specialists provide training that enables clients to develop or restore activities of daily living skills, promote independence, enhance safety, and mobility.

We offer a unique opportunity for an experienced Mobility and Orientation Specialist to join our team in Hamilton, ON (Central West Region). As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for providing orientation and mobility lessons to individuals with vision loss, helping them acquire travel skills and regain independence.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct assessments and document O&M needs and personal goals of individuals with vision loss.
  • Identify and prioritize goals and develop an orientation & mobility service plan with individuals.
  • Teach concept development, spatial and sensory awareness, pre-cane skills, cane techniques, and travel skills.
  • Encourage assertiveness/advocacy skills and provide support to individuals in using electronic travel aids.
  • Provide tactile maps as required and teach sighted guide to family members and others.
  • Liaise with community-based rehabilitation teams, agencies, schools, partners, and stakeholders.

Requirements:

  • Graduate of the Instructor for Blind and Visually Impaired Program (Mohawk College) or Diploma in Specialized Studies, O&M and Vision Rehabilitation (University of Montreal).
  • Undergraduate degree or equivalent.
  • ACVREP Certified Orientation & Mobility Specialist (COMS) certification would be an asset.
