Definity Financial Corporation is seeking a highly skilled Litigation Counsel to join our Claims and Trials team. As a key member of our litigation team, you will be responsible for managing complex insurance claims from inception through to trial.

The ideal candidate will possess a strong background in insurance litigation, with 1-7 years of post-call experience working on multiple tort files. They will also have a proven track record of preparing written court materials, appearing in court, and advising on litigation strategies at the case level.

Key Responsibilities
  • Manage complex insurance claims from inception through to trial
  • Prepare written court materials, including pleadings, motions, and other documents
  • Appear in court as a representative of Definity Financial Corporation
  • Advise on litigation strategies at the case level
  • Play an advisory role to Definity's Claims department in relation to claims litigation

In addition to your technical skills and experience, we are looking for someone who is a strong communicator, able to work effectively with colleagues, clients, and stakeholders. You will need to possess excellent verbal and written communication skills, as well as the ability to critically analyze situations, problem-solve, and deal with ambiguity.

Requirements
  • Law Degree from an accredited law school (LLB or Juris Doctor)
  • Licensed by the Law Society of Ontario to practice law as a lawyer in Ontario
  • 1-7 years of post-call experience working in insurance litigation, ideally with trial experience
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, including Word and PowerPoint
  • High degree of personal ethics, integrity, and responsibility with an ability to deal with sensitive issues and safeguard confidential information
  • Assertiveness in practice, but reasonable and forthright
  • Interest in court advocacy, especially trial work
