Mechanical Design Engineer for Advanced Transit Systems

New Flyer is a leading manufacturer of heavy-duty transit buses in North America, offering advanced product lines under the Xcelsior and Xcelsior CHARGE brands.
Job SummaryWe are seeking a skilled Mechanical Design Engineer to join our New Product Development (NPD) Department. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for completing engineering design tasks and projects from concept to implementation.
The successful candidate will have a strong background in mechanical engineering, excellent problem-solving skills, and experience with CAD software such as SolidWorks and AutoCAD. They will also possess excellent communication and project management skills, with the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment.
Key Responsibilities- Execute and complete mechanical engineering design tasks and project assignments in support of prototyping/testing & product development activities per NPD product development processes.
- Coordinate own tasks to ensure deadlines are met per project schedule and applicable lead times. Includes maintaining task status, task progress, and communicating risks to task scope change.
- Create engineering designs that meet customer specifications, Technical Summaries, other contract documents, and any applicable standards or industry best practices. Ensure designs meet performance, buildability, design efficiency, and align with outlined design philosophy.
- Perform engineering calculations and analysis to ensure compliance with design criteria and all applicable standards and regulations.
- Complete controlled testing of components and system to meet contractual obligations, vendor requirements (SAA), ensure product reliability, performance, and verify component fit.
- Complete engineering drawings and release documents in accordance with engineering procedures.
- Provide engineering support to Production, Quality Assurance, Customer Service Support, and other departments as directed by NPD Management.
- Interact with vendors and customers on design-related issues. Provide, where required, Supplier Application Approval requests for new component system installations or applications.
- Check engineering documents, Instructions to service, shop floor instructions, and other documents as authorized.
- Participate in required project design reviews and any applicable FMEA and Hazard Analysis exercises.
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering Technology Diploma, or equivalent qualification.
- Professional Engineer registration (or eligibility) or Certified Engineering Technologist designation.
- 5-10 years of design experience with a proven ability to meet performance objectives.
- Proficiency in CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, AutoCAD) and engineering analysis tools.
- Project management experience is a plus.
The estimated annual salary for this position is $85,000 - $110,000, depending on qualifications and experience.
