Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Research Assistant to join our team at the University of British Columbia. The successful candidate will work closely with our research group to coordinate fieldwork in the Yukon Territory and lab work, ensuring the successful completion of our research initiatives.

This role involves coordinating fieldwork, including conducting alpine field research and maintaining a common garden experiment. The ideal candidate will also be responsible for processing root samples, time-lapse and drone imagery, and audio recordings collected during the 2024 summer. Additionally, they will maintain a growth chamber experiment over the winter of 2024-25.

Key Responsibilities
  • Coordinate fieldwork in the Yukon Territory, including alpine field research and common garden experiments
  • Process root samples, time-lapse and drone imagery, and audio recordings
  • Maintain a growth chamber experiment
  • Provide support with field and lab work, administrative tasks, and managing Work Learn and volunteer students
Requirements

To be successful in this role, you will need:

  • A high school graduation and some additional training in a related field
  • A minimum of two years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Excellent organization and time management skills
  • Leadership skills and experience in project management
  • Previous research experience in a related field
  • Familiarity with plant ID, drones, or other remote sensing technology
  • Familiarity with programming language R and basic data manipulation and analysis skills
Preferred Qualifications

We welcome candidates with:

  • Experience conducting field and/or lab experiments
  • Experience managing data, including imagery, audio recordings, and climate records
  • Experience developing research reports
  • Expertise in root picking and plant care
  • Knowledge of alpine and Arctic vegetation
  • Knowledge of data management and analysis software
What We Offer

We offer a competitive salary range of $42,600 - $48,450 CAD per year, commensurate with experience. This role also offers opportunities for professional growth and development, as well as a dynamic and collaborative work environment.
