Job Summary:


Vancouver Coastal Health is seeking a skilled Concurrent Disorders Counsellor to join the STEPS Strathcona Team in the Downtown Eastside, Vancouver. As a member of the Integrated Care Team, you will work to address client and family-centred care needs through a holistic mental health, substance use, and primary care lens.


Key Responsibilities:



  • Provide care coordination to a select caseload of clients, addressing their complex health needs.
  • Work collaboratively with the interdisciplinary team to develop and implement client care plans.
  • Practice respectfully and within VCH policies, guidelines, and clinical practice documents.
  • Establish and maintain therapeutic relationships based on respect, trust, and empathy.
  • Provide direct care activities, including assessing, planning, implementing, evaluating, and documenting client care.
  • Act as a resource for the Downtown Eastside integrated team by providing information and support related to clients with complex health care needs.

Qualifications:


Education & Experience:



  • A Master's Degree in a behavioural health science (such as counselling, psychology, or social work) from a recognized program that includes a clinical supervised practicum and two (2) years' recent related experience providing care through a holistic mental health, substance use, and primary care lens.
  • A valid BC Drivers License is preferred.

Knowledge & Abilities:



  • Comprehensive knowledge of other healthcare disciplines and their role in client care.
  • Demonstrated ability in dealing with a variety of situations and responsibilities requiring initiative, creativity, and professional judgment.
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of a client and family-centred recovery model in mental illness.
  • Ability to assess clients at risk and knowledge of appropriate acts; Mental Health Act, Adult Guardianship, Public Health Act as it relates to the rights and obligations of clients and staff.
  • Knowledge and experience in providing culturally safe and competent care, specifically pertaining to Aboriginal people.
  • Knowledge and experience in Trauma Informed Practice, Harm Reduction, and Recovery Oriented Care.
  • Broad knowledge of crisis intervention and supportive counseling skills.
  • Broad knowledge of mental health illness and treatment.
  • Broad knowledge of substance abuse and addictions treatment.
  • Broad knowledge of other facilities and community resources.
