The successful candidate will inspect and monitor construction and demolition activities, review and approve construction plans, and investigate complaints and apply enforcement as necessary.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Inspect and monitor construction and demolition activities for compliance with the Ontario Building Code and related municipal bylaws
  • Review and approve construction plans and specifications
  • Investigate complaints and apply enforcement as necessary
  • Liaise with property owners, contractors, engineers, architects, and other stakeholders
  • Verify existing site conditions and investigate complaints
  • Inspect fire-damaged or unsafe buildings and determine the extent of damage and required repairs
  • Inspect for partial and complete occupancy clearances
  • Prepare evidence for presentation before the provincial courts and represent the City in civil litigation

Qualifications:

  • Ontario Secondary School Diploma or equivalent combined with an additional year of post-secondary education in the field of Plumbing and/or Sheet Metal Worker
  • Provincial Qualifications from the Ministry of Municipal Affairs in General Legal/Process, H.V.A.C. House and Building Services, or Plumbing House and Plumbing All Buildings
  • Experience in the design and installation of building, plumbing, heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems
  • Knowledge of the Ontario Building Code and other related standards
  • Effective oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to deal tactfully and courteously with the public
  • Good problem-solving and conflict resolution skills

Working Conditions:

This role requires the ability to work in a fast-paced environment, lift up to 11 lbs, and travel to off-site locations. The successful candidate must also be able to work in a smoke-free office environment.
