{"POSITION ACCOUNTABILITIES": "

As a Train Conductor with CP, you will be responsible for ensuring the safe and efficient movement of trains. Your duties will include:

  • Working in train or yard service, depending on seniority
  • Following and executing work according to operating rules and safety procedures
  • Carrying out specific instructions detailing a train's route and specific movements
  • Coordinating the switching of cars, including coupling and uncoupling cars and lifting out coupling devices
  • Observing, interpreting, and relaying signals and other indications affecting the movement of trains
  • Signaling crew members for movement of the engine or train using specific signals, or radio to indicate when to start, stop, back up, set or release air brakes
  • Having a thorough understanding of and following General Code of Operating Rules (GCOR), General Orders and Bulletins as they pertain to the safe movement of trains, goods, and hazardous materials, ensuring the safety of CP employees and the general public
  • Providing flag protection and relaying signals to trains in an emergency situation as stipulated in the operating rules
  • Moving on and off moving or stationary equipment while the train is performing industrial, station or yard switching
  • Riding moving cars by hanging onto grab irons or ladders, sometimes for extended periods of time
  • Filling out required forms, including train orders and switch lists, and preparing required clear and legible reports
  • Maintaining first aid qualifications and applying first aid in emergency situations
  • Monitoring yard operations areas and being alert to changing conditions, taking safe and responsible action to prevent personal injury and equipment damage

To be successful in this role, you will need:

  • A high school diploma or general equivalency diploma (GED)
  • To be at least 18 years old
  • To possess a valid driver's license
  • A valid Canadian passport, allowing entry/re-entry to the United States
  • To be available for call 24 hours a day and respond to the designated work site within two hours of receiving the call
  • To work schedules that are irregular and determined by the rotation of the extra board, including weekends and holidays
  • To perform work for up to 12 hours per shift, where you may be traveling away from home and be away for 24-48 hours at a time
  • To work outdoors in all types of weather conditions
  • To walk long distances on railroad roadbeds
  • To be able to lift up to 100lbs on occasion
  • To recognize and distinguish between the colors of signals, signs, and other visual displays
  • To possess good communication skills and work efficiently with minimum supervision
  • To be at ease working with, on and around heavy equipment that is in motion
  • To be able to pass the required examinations, read and understand safety instructions, books of rules, instructions and regulations, timetables, bulletins, waybills, placards, and other written or printed material
