About the Role

The Recreation Programmer reports to the Therapeutic Recreation Manager/Recreation Manager or designate. The Recreation Programmer supports the implementation and evaluation of activity programs to meet the holistic needs and interests of persons served, while maintaining the rights of residents and ensuring they are treated with respect and dignity.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Team Collaboration: Be an engaged collaborative team player, developing and maintaining professional relationships that support and strengthen the organizational culture and purpose.
  2. Program Development: Promotes, publicizes and carries out established recreation programs such as outings, exercises, crafts, social events, entertainment, games.
  3. Resident Support: Assists residents and provides portering to and from programs as required.
  4. Observation and Reporting: Observes, documents and reports any changes in residents to the supervisor and/or nurse.
  5. Environment Safety: Maintains a safe environment for residents, family and staff through: accident prevention, knowledge of emergency procedures and regulations, the safe use of supplies and equipment, and reporting when repairs are necessary, and utilizing infection control procedures.
  6. Documentation and Confidentiality: Maintains appropriate documentation as per policy and procedures, confidentiality, and security.
  7. Staff Orientation and Training: Actively participates in orientation of new staff, community programs, meetings, committees, and educational in-services.
  8. Statistical Record Keeping: Assists in the maintenance of statistical records using programs such as Activity Pro, Point Click Care, etc.
  9. Volunteer Support: Provides guidance, assistance, and support to volunteers. Assists in the evaluation of volunteers.
  10. Additional Duties: Performs other related duties as required.
Qualifications and Skills
  1. Education: Grade 12 Education
  2. Certifications: Graduate from a recognized Activity/Recreation Certificate program.
  3. Experience: Previous experience in a senior's focused environment an asset.
  4. Training: Dementia course an asset.
  5. Certifications: Valid First Aid Level 1 Certificate.
  6. Certifications: Serving It Right Certificate.
  7. Certifications: Food Safe Level 1 Certificate an asset.
  8. Driver's License: Valid Class 4 (Unrestricted) BC Driver's License.
  9. Criminal Record Check: All successful applicants must pass the vulnerable sector Criminal Record Check applicable to Provincial guidelines.
  10. Physical Abilities: Ability to push, pull, stoop, crouch, lift and carry up to 50 lbs. Must be able to work with cleaners, detergents, and other cleaning equipment.
  11. Communication Skills: Ability to read, write and speak English proficiently and understand verbal and written instructions.
  12. Interpersonal and Organizational Skills: Good interpersonal and organizational skills.
