About the Role

We are looking for an experienced Engineering Manager to lead our Server team at Canonical, a pioneering tech firm at the forefront of the open-source movement. As a member of our leadership team, you will be responsible for building and leading a globally distributed team of engineers, developing talent through coaching, mentoring, feedback, and hands-on career development.

You will work closely with Product Management to define the vision and strategy for Ubuntu and your team, effectively setting and managing expectations with other engineering teams, senior management, and external stakeholders. Your role will also involve advocating and advancing modern, agile software development practices, developing and evangelizing great engineering and organizational practices, and growing a healthy, collaborative engineering culture in line with the company values.

In this role, you will participate in strong engineering process through code and architectural review, engage with teams at Canonical, the open-source community, and commercial partners, and oversee the quality of the Ubuntu Server image family. You will also plan and deliver Ubuntu Server features and work from home with global travel for up to 6 weeks per year for internal and external events.

Your Background

To succeed in this role, you should have a strong track record of developing and growing people, with 3+ years of experience in leading, managing, coaching, and mentoring software developers. You should be knowledgeable and passionate about software development, focused on success and the delivery of timely, high-quality software, and experienced working in an agile development environment.

You should have a Bachelor's or equivalent degree in Computer Science, STEM, or a similar field, as well as strong written and verbal technical communication skills in English. Practical experience with a modern GNU/Linux distribution, Debian or Ubuntu preferred, and experience with at least one of Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud, or Amazon Web Services is also required.
