Victoria Newitt Recruitment Inc has been retained by our natural, sustainable food 'Client' to search for a Research and Development Manager.

The R&D Manager will be responsible for working with cross-functional teams to innovate and develop new and existing products and processes across our client's range that support strategic objectives and growth. This position will lead Innovation, Improvement, Regulatory, and Quality improvements.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Responsible for planning, prioritizing, and delivering a portfolio of product innovation and renovation projects to support overall company strategy and growth.
  • Executes product and/or process development projects to ensure business objectives are delivered on target cost.
  • Work with other functional departments to identify, evaluate, and prioritize product development projects and opportunities.
  • Builds effective processes and relationships to be an effective Innovation and Development team.
  • Conducts and develops prototypes from laboratory to evaluation in production.
  • Performs ongoing sensory evaluation and shelf life study on new and existing products.
  • Helps develop and assist with improvement programs to ensure we continuously strive to improve our product quality and design, and manufacturing processes.
  • Exhibits innovation in discovery, advancement, evaluation, and implementation of new proprietary technologies, products, and processes to meet company strategic goals.
  • Develops and reviews cost reduction strategies on new and existing products.
  • Conducts competitive benchmarking, technology reviews, and intellectual property searches.
  • Develops and implements cost reduction strategies on new and existing products.
  • Assists management in establishing critical design parameters for product, functional claims, ingredient strategies, stability systems, process development, and packaging format.
  • Understands current CFIA/FDA labelling regulations. Notifies management of any changes or issues.
  • Works with government bodies such as CFIA and other health professionals as required.
  • Understands Organic regulations and Non-GMO requirements and maintains certificates and fills for new applications.
  • Prepares yearly SRED and other reports as needed.
  • Actively participates and collaborates with other departments (operations, marketing, regulatory, finance, sales) to advance product development initiatives and achieve desired business results.
  • This position requires some level of travel and schedule flexibility.
Qualifications:
  • Masters Food Science degree or a Food Technology diploma required.
  • 7+ years' experience in research and development, with a focus on product development.
  • Strong ability to plan, develop, and implement team-based systems.
  • Strong industrial research and analytical skills.
  • Experience building relationships and working with external partners, including suppliers and co-packers.
  • Strong understanding of trends, food science, ingredient functionality, product development, experimental design, process technology, and commercialization, across at least two product categories.
  • Organized, flexible, quick thinker with a pro-active attitude.
  • Knowledge of food safety, GMP, HACCP, and work safety practices.
  • Knowledge of Canadian Food Safety regulations and standards.
  • Knowledge of Organic, Non-GMO, and Kosher certification standards and requirements.
  • Advanced computer skills including MS Excel and Word.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to take initiative, drive for alignment and decisions, and contribute disruptive ideas.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment.
  • Willingness to travel.
