Victim Representation Role Overview

The Lethbridge Legal Guidance Society seeks a skilled lawyer to join their team as a Victim's Representative Counsel. This position is based in the Lethbridge office but requires occasional meetings with victims and survivors at local community agencies.

This full-time role involves providing legal advice and representation to individuals impacted by sexual, relationship, domestic violence, and stalking. As part of the legal team, the successful candidate will work under the supervision of the Executive Director and focus on expanding LLG's advocacy response.

Key Responsibilities

  • Advocate for victims and survivors in the legal system, including identifying overlapping legal issues in other areas such as family law.
  • Provide legal support and assistance to victims/survivors of sexual and domestic violence, navigating police, legal processes, and community partners.
  • Educate victims/survivors on the criminal justice system and their rights, serving as a liaison with law enforcement and crown prosecutors during investigations and prosecutions.
  • Taking carriage of intersecting family law matters where applicable and preparing clients for family court appearances.

Requirements

  • A Law degree with 5+ years of related experience, active and in good standing with the Law Society of Alberta.
  • Extensive experience working with multiple stakeholders, including police, courts, and social service agencies.
  • Ability to foster positive relationships with social services, particularly those supporting victims/survivors of domestic violence.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills, handling multiple tasks simultaneously and prioritizing workload.

Estimated Salary: $80,000-$85,000 per year, depending on qualifications and location. The successful candidate must be able to ensure privacy, professionalism, and a team-player approach to practicing law.
