Job Summary
This Mental Health Nurse Specialist position plays a vital role in providing comprehensive mental health care to clients. The successful candidate will work closely with inter-professional teams to design and implement individual treatment plans, promoting community functioning and reducing re-hospitalization.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide ongoing intensive outreach nursing care, case management, and mental health and substance use support services for assigned clients
- Collaborate with community mental health and substance use staff, emergency services, Indigenous partners, and community service providers
- Design, implement, and monitor individual treatment plans to maximize community functioning and reduce re-hospitalization
Requirements
- Registration with the BC College of Nurses and Midwives as a practicing RN registrant or a practicing RPN registrant
- Minimum 2 years of experience in mental health and substance use programming or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience
- Advanced preparation in clinical specialty areas, including Psychedelic Assisted Therapy RN and completion of a graduate certificate program from an accredited educational institute
- Experience with various healing modalities, such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy, Dialectical Behavior Therapy, Grof Breathwork, Internal Family Systems, Emotional Focused Therapy (EFT), Sensorimotor Psychotherapy, Hakomi, etc.
Skills and Qualifications
- Assessment and Intervention: Demonstrated ability to complete initial and ongoing client assessments and provide nursing care through appropriate interventions
- Communication: Ability to communicate effectively with clients, families, the public, medical staff, and interdisciplinary teams using verbal, written, and computer communication means
- Critical Thinking: Ability to integrate and evaluate pertinent data to problem-solve effectively
- Human Caring and Relationship-Centered Practice: Promote client-focused care that demonstrates care for and with clients, sensitive to diverse cultures and preferences, client advocacy, and social justice concerns
- Culturally Safe and Trauma-Informed Care: Create culturally safe, trauma-informed healthcare settings through individualized care planning and collaborative approaches to service provision
- Teaching: Ability to transmit information to instruct clients and others about topics essential to healthcare and well-being
- Management: Manage time and resources, implementing activities to promote cooperation among relevant others, collaboration across disciplines, and related activities
- Leadership: Promote staff morale, cooperation, assertiveness, risk-taking, creative planning for change, and implementation of Northern Health policies or other protocols
- Knowledge Integration: Use factual information, prior learning, and basic principles and procedures to support decisions and actions with relevant research-based evidence
