Mental Health Clinician Job Description

Working as a member of an interdisciplinary team, this position is responsible for providing assessment and treatment recommendations to professional caregivers and family physicians regarding the management and treatment of seniors with complex mental health issues residing in long-term care and supported living facilities, and on rehabilitation/transitional units.


Key Responsibilities

Responsibilities include:



  • Providing assessment and treatment recommendations to professional caregivers and family physicians
  • Supporting professional caregivers and family members as required
  • Consulting and liaising with other professionals along a continuum of care to facilitate a coordinated network of mental health services to seniors, and their caregivers and families
  • Working as a member of the multidisciplinary healthcare team collaborating on the delivery of care for the needs of individuals, families, and/or communities
  • Liaising with a variety of internal and external stakeholders and working collaboratively with other team members as required

Requirements

To be successful in this role, candidates will have:



  • Completion of one of the following programs: a Master's degree in Psychology, a Bachelor's degree in Social Work incorporating education in mental health assessment, brief counseling, and crisis intervention, a Master's or Bachelor's degree in Occupational Therapy with similar educational components, a Bachelor's degree in Nursing with training and experience in mental health assessment, crisis intervention, and brief counseling, or a Bachelor's degree in Psychiatric Nursing
  • Active or eligible for registration with the applicable Alberta regulatory college
  • Minimum 3 years mental health experience within the last 5 years including at least 1 year's experience in geriatric mental health
  • Experience working on a multidisciplinary team and in collaboration with other health partner agencies
  • Extensive knowledge of clinical mental health syndromes and medical issues commonly seen in the senior's population
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced subacute environment
  • Ability to work independently and within an outreach model
  • Strong mental health and medical assessments, consultation, and intervention skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Basic computer and word processing skills
  • Ability to set priorities and organize time effectively
