Job Summary

The Field Coordinator plays a crucial role in supporting on-site research, teaching, and community programs at the University of British Columbia's Centre for Sustainable Food Systems. This position involves coordinating and performing land stewardship and crop production activities, as well as providing basic agricultural services and consultation to other site participants.

Key Responsibilities
  • Coordinate and oversee day-to-day land stewardship and production activities for a defined range of agricultural crops.
  • Provide basic agricultural services and consultation to other site participants, including researchers, instructors, and community program leaders.
  • Assist with the production of various field-grown crops, including fruits, vegetables, and herbs.
  • Conduct land stewardship and production activities, including plant propagation, field cultivation, irrigation management, and data collection.
  • Provide practical training and limited theoretical instruction to student workers, practicum students, and volunteers.
  • Assist with general operational tasks, such as equipment maintenance and repair, and procurement of supplies.
Requirements

To be successful in this role, you will need:

  • Completion of a technical program and a minimum two years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Strong technical competence with and theoretical understanding of a broad range of horticultural and land management techniques.
  • Ability to safely and efficiently operate and maintain a broad range of hand tools, power tools, tractors, field implements, and other agricultural equipment.
  • Intermediate computer skills and ability to record, manage, and manipulate data using Microsoft Excel.
  • Effective verbal and written communication, leadership, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work efficiently and safely both independently and within a team environment.
Working Conditions

This position involves working both indoors and outdoors at the UBC Farm, with shared indoor office space provided. Outdoor duties are performed in all kinds of weather, and may involve manual field work and the use of a wide variety of equipment and machinery.
