Job Summary

The Genome Sciences Technologist performs various molecular biology techniques and procedures, including library construction, in the operation of a large-scale, high-throughput DNA mapping and DNA sequencing production facility.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform tasks such as colony purification of plasmid/BAC clones, RNA and DNA purification, DNA sequencing, analysis of DNA fingerprints for physical map construction, Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) experiments, DNA restriction analysis, agarose gel electrophoresis, southern blot analysis, and library construction.
  • Prepare solutions following standard operating procedures.
  • Maintain general lab and equipment cleanliness, recognizing and reporting malfunctions in equipment.
  • Process patient samples according to established procedures for clinical sequencing diagnostic tests.
  • Perform other related duties as required.

Requirements

  • Graduation from a recognized diploma program in Biotechnology, Microbiology, or Biochemistry, and two (2) years of recent related experience in a research laboratory or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience acceptable to the Genome Sciences Centre Group Leaders and Production Coordinators.
  • Knowledge of molecular biology techniques, particularly DNA and RNA preparation and manipulation.
  • Demonstrate ability to perform detailed procedures reproducibly and accurately.
  • Demonstrate interpersonal skills, including the ability to work effectively with others in a team environment.
  • Ability to efficiently organize work assignments and establish priorities.
  • Basic knowledge of and ability to operate personal computers.
  • Skills in CPR techniques.
  • Commitment to upholding the shared responsibility of creating lasting and meaningful reconciliation in Canada, as per the Truth and Reconciliation Commission and BC's Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act.
  • Knowledge of social, economic, political, and historical realities impacting Indigenous communities and familiarity with Indigenous Cultural Safety and anti-racism and accompanying reports (BC DRIPA, TRC, etc.).
