Role Overview

The successful candidate will lead a property accounting team through full cycle accounting activities for a commercial portfolio. This includes monthly and quarterly property financial statements, annual operating costs and tax recovery reconciliations, annual budgets, and more.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Provide leadership, direction, coaching and mentorship to develop and motivate a high-performance team, including hiring, training, goal setting and succession management.
  2. Responsible for timely and accurate completion of annual activities such as property budgets, final operating cost recovery adjustments, annual property taxes, and property audits.
  3. Participate in the planning process for timing and completion of annual and monthly activities including forecasts, annual budgets, audits, annual operating cost recovery adjustments, property taxes, monthly cut-off schedules, and monthly reporting.
  4. Review of direct team activities to ensure that desired results are achieved according to deadlines, accounting standards, standard operating procedures, and policies/requirements.
  5. Responsible for timely completion of property accounting activities including month-end, quarter-end, year-end, operating cost audits, recoveries, budgets, and forecasts.
  6. Proactively identify and analyze opportunities for improving quality, effectiveness, and efficiency of team deliveries, and take action to put solutions in place to achieve optimal results.
  7. Liaise with property management, asset management, and other functional groups to ensure property accounting team is delivering responsive, top tier service as well as provide assistance and support as required.
  8. Work with internal and external auditors on operational reviews and audits as well as audit working papers, financial statement audits, and operating cost audits for tenants.
  9. Support positive team dynamics and culture including a positive, open, team focused work atmosphere.
  10. Support with new property set up, analysis, and follow-up of complex and/or outstanding issues such as clearing balance sheet reconciliations as required.
  11. Support with property onboarding and offboarding including helping to prepare final operating statements, distributions, tax reconciliation, bank accounts, and other acquisition and disposition related activities.
  12. Provide expert knowledge on property accounting and act as go-to resource for team.
  13. Actively contribute to process improvement ideas and lead or participate in special projects for the ongoing advancement of best-in-class capabilities and service excellence.
  14. Review and approve financial accounting working papers to ensure effective property accounting including follow-ups and resolutions as required for best-in-class service and for both internal and external auditors.
  15. Deliver service excellence to all clients, tenants, and team members.
