Job Description

We are seeking a highly skilled Child Life Specialist to join our team in Vancouver, BC. As a key member of our Child & Youth Therapeutic Services team, you will provide activities that further the social, emotional, intellectual, and physical development of children and youth.

About the Role

This is a full-time position working Tuesday to Friday from 8am-4pm at BC Children's Hospital, located at 4500 Oak Street, Vancouver BC. The successful candidate will work collaboratively with healthcare professionals to support the growth and development of children and youth.

Responsibilities
  • Conducts screenings and assessments of patients utilizing established standards and guidelines, identifying and obtaining relevant data for child life services.
  • Develops and implements care plans incorporating individual patient needs, cultural, religious, learning, social, and economic factors.
  • Provides preparation, alternate focus, and coping skills coaching for patients undergoing medical procedures and psychosocial support to minimize stress and anxiety during hospitalization.
  • Plans, initiates, and supervises activities that foster continued growth and development in children and youth, including therapeutic and medical play opportunities.
  • Maintains accurate records of assessments, care plans, recommendations, and interventions according to established formats and timelines.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's Degree in an area related to Child Development with required coursework for child life certification.
  • Meets eligibility requirements to write the Child Life Certification Examination.
  • Demonstrated ability to assess and interact with patients and families, applying theories of human growth and development, family systems, and cultural diversity.
  • Demonstrated ability to represent and communicate the role of child life to others.
  • Demonstrated ability to organize and prioritize work, as well as work effectively within an interdisciplinary team.
