Staff Representative
We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Staff Representative to join our Advocacy team at the BC General Employees' Union (BCGEU). This is an exciting opportunity to work in a dynamic and rewarding environment, utilizing your expertise to promote workers' rights and support union members.
About Us
The BCGEU is one of the largest and most diverse unions in British Columbia, with over 90,000 members in 550 bargaining units across the public and private sectors. We have a rich history dating back to the early 1900s, when provincial government employees formed an association to address their working conditions. Since then, we have organized thousands of workers outside the government service and continue to grow.
Mission and Values
The BCGEU believes that every worker is entitled to union representation and free collective bargaining without discrimination. We strive to eliminate barriers to members' involvement and inclusion in union activities. Our mission is to advance the goals and values of the labour movement, promoting social justice, equality, workplace safety, decent wages, and working conditions. We aim to provide a healthy, safe, and inclusive workplace where respect and diversity are recognized assets.
Role Summary
This is a challenging and rewarding role that requires a strong understanding of collective agreements, grievance handling, and formal arbitration. As a Staff Representative, you will represent the union and its members at arbitration hearings, the Labour Relations Board, and other adjudicative tribunals. You will also be responsible for analyzing legal issues, conducting merit assessments, and determining appropriate resolutions for outstanding issues.
Key Responsibilities:
- Represent the union and its members at arbitration hearings, the Labour Relations Board, and other adjudicative tribunals.
- Analyze legal issues, conduct merit assessments, and determine appropriate resolutions for outstanding issues.
- Prepare and present cases at formal arbitration and mediation.
- Negotiate and resolve disputes with senior management and their counsel.
- Collaborate with union officers, stewards, and activists to address grievances and resolve issues.
Requirements and Qualifications:
- A minimum of 3-5 years of experience in labour law or a similar union advocacy role.
- A degree in law and litigation experience is an asset.
- Demonstrated experience in grievance file analysis, merit assessments, and case preparation for arbitration.
- Experience working with senior management and legal counsel to resolve disputes or negotiate settlements.
Benefits and Compensation:
As a valued member of our team, you will enjoy a competitive salary range of $70,882.54 - $137,562.10 annually. In addition to a generous compensation package, you will have access to exceptional benefits and enrollment in a defined benefits pension plan. We offer a flexible work environment, including generous leave entitlements and flexible work-from-home arrangements.
How to Apply:
To be considered for this exciting opportunity, please submit a cover letter and resume clearly outlining how you meet the qualifications necessary for this position.
