The Senior Accounting Specialist plays a pivotal role in ensuring the accuracy and integrity of our financial records, performing journal entries, balance sheet accounts analysis, and GL account reconciliations.

Primary responsibilities include commission, intercompany and various other journal entries. This role is also responsible for handling related audit queries and contributing to the month-end close process.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Analyzing intercompany transactions and balances to ensure elimination of intercompany accounts during consolidation.
  • Supporting the intercompany recharge process and booking intercompany recharges.
  • Preparing journal entries for commission accruals, reversals, payments, and true ups.
  • Preparing monthly Balance Sheet accounts review package for Aviva Canada Inc., with detailed explanations and supporting documentation.
  • Running month-end control reports using PBCS (SmartView based tool).
  • Assisting with Corporate accounting month-end activities, including IBNR journals and late adjustments.
  • Collaborating with the Manager, Corporate Accounting on tasks related to month-end close and balance reconciliations.

To succeed in this role, you will need:

  • Professional accounting designation (CPA, CA, CGA or CMA) or equivalent education.
  • 4-5 years of relevant experience in accounting and reporting, with working experience with any ERP general ledger system.
  • Knowledge of the P&C insurance industry is an asset.
  • Familiarity with SmartView reporting tool and any reconciliation tool will be an asset.
  • Good understanding of accounting operations and account reconciliations.
  • Ability to improve processes while delivering under tight timelines.
  • Sound technical accounting skills, with knowledge of IFRS17 accounting standard, related best practices, controls, and accounting principles.
  • Proven track record of managing multiple functions and tasks in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to effectively collaborate with managers and peers.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to work with complex issues and concepts.
