About the Role

We are seeking a skilled Health Information Coder to join our team at Nova Scotia Health Authority. In this role, you will be responsible for providing accurate coding and abstraction of inpatient, day surgery, and emergency health information.

Responsibilities
  • Integrate clinical knowledge and information systems to contribute to quality, patient safety, decision making, and planning of healthcare services.
  • Collect data, maintain information integrity, and report health information in a responsible and knowledgeable way.
  • Produce timely high-quality coded and abstracted data, monitor data quality, and prepare submissions for CIHI and other specialty programs.
Requirements
  • Diploma from a recognized Canada Health Information Management Association program (2085 hours).
  • Certified with the Canadian College of Health Information Management and hold active certified membership in good standing with Canadian Health Information Management Association (CHIMA).
  • Knowledge of National and Provincial legislation and NSHA/Area policies that govern Confidentiality, Privacy, and security of health information.
  • 2 years of coding experience in the health information management field.
  • Commitment to ongoing learning and professional development including completion of 36 continuing education credits every three years post-graduation.
  • Current knowledge of data collection standards, including Canadian Institute of Health Information standards.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office programs (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Lync, and Outlook calendar).

We welcome applicants who possess excellent critical thinking skills, attention to detail, communication, interpersonal, collaboration, and teamwork skills. Proficiency in other languages is an asset, particularly French.
