Our team works closely with 204 First Nations in BC, striving to create a balanced and caring work environment that is respectful and supportive.
Salary:$123,000 per annum (negotiable based on education and experience).
Job Description:
We are seeking an experienced Staff Lawyer to join our Prince Rupert Indigenous Justice Centre team. As a key member of our team, you will use your legal skills to reduce the over-representation of Indigenous children and youth in care and incarcerated individuals in the criminal justice system. Your primary focus will be on child protection matters, with a secondary focus on criminal justice matters.
Responsibilities:
• Provide legal representation for child protection and criminal matters to clients who would not otherwise have legal representation;
• Advocate on behalf of clients for the diversion of their legal matters from the formal court system to less intrusive measures;
• Work closely with the Resource and Support Worker to provide wrap-around services that meet the needs of your client;
• Develop and maintain working relationships with Indigenous communities and service providers;
• Collaborate with government agencies and service providers to ensure clients have access to culturally safe and Indigenized programs and services;
• Maintain comprehensive and up-to-date client files;
Requirements:
• Member of the Law Society of British Columbia in good standing;
• J.D./LL.B. or Advanced Degrees/Joint J.D./J.I.D.;
• 1-5 years' experience in litigation, preferably in child protection with some criminal background experience;
• Knowledge of local and urban Indigenous cultures;
• Ability to provide a culturally safe environment for clients;
• Strong organizational, case and file management skills;
• Valid Driver's License;
