Legal Counsel

The Nunatsiavut Government is seeking a highly skilled Legal Counsel to provide expert legal advice and support to the organization and the Nunatsiavut Assembly. As a key member of the legal team, you will play a critical role in shaping the government's legal strategy and ensuring compliance with relevant laws and regulations.
Key Responsibilities:- Provide legal advice and support to the NG and the Nunatsiavut Assembly on a variety of legal issues, including lands and natural resources, governmental affairs, public and administrative law, procurement, Indigenous rights, and environmental law.
- Assist senior Government staff in the development and preparation of legislation, policies, and directives, including research, strategic analysis, and risk evaluation and mitigation.
- Advise on interpretation and implementation of the Labrador Inuit Land Claims Agreement and advise on national, provincial, and international laws, policies, and initiatives in relation to Indigenous peoples and with respect to Indigenous Rights.
- Handle legal proceedings in which the NG is involved, including civil and regulatory proceedings, environmental assessments, judicial reviews, inquiries, and proceedings before boards, commissions, and tribunals, parliamentary hearings, and proceedings in relation to offences under Inuit laws.
- Assist with negotiations and dispute resolution, including arbitration and mediation.
- Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) or Juris Doctor (J.D.) from a recognized university.
- Experience with public law, constitutional law, administrative law, and regulatory compliance.
- Member of the Newfoundland and Labrador Law Society.
- Exceptional interpersonal, communication, and organizational abilities.
