Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Assistant Payroll Manager to join our Finance Department in Scarborough. The successful candidate will lead and manage a team of Payroll specialists, processing pay for all pay groups.

Key Responsibilities

  • Supervise the processing of payrolls for various employee groups.
  • Oversee the payroll team in collaboration with the payroll supervisor, providing guidance, mentoring, and support as needed.
  • Prepare payroll reporting for internal stakeholders.
  • Complete monthly journal entries for all Companies, reconciling payroll accounts.
  • Answer senior management inquiries regarding general ledger accounts.
  • Maintain and update Payroll systems with updated account information and employee allocations.
  • Prepare annual company Salary wage and fringe benefit budgets.
  • Ensure accurate record keeping.
  • Stay up-to-date on payroll best practices and compliance.
  • Monitor federal and provincial legislation updates to ensure payroll accuracy.
  • Develop and maintain standard and custom reports for data reviews.
  • Create and manage the yearly department budget.
  • Establish and manage database infrastructure, including Jobs, Positions, Benefit Plans, and more.
  • Prepare year-end audit schedules and report to auditors.
  • Prepare and balance T4, T4a, RL-1, and related filings.

Requirements

  • Degree in Accounting, Business Admin, or related field (desired but not required).
  • CPP, CPM, or other related certifications (a plus).
  • 7-10 years of payroll experience, with 3-5 years in management responsibility.
  • Working knowledge of Ceridian Dayforce payroll system and timekeeping systems like UKG Pro Workforce.
  • Demonstrated initiative, problem-solving, decision-making, troubleshooting, and analytical skills.
  • Strong MS Office skills, including Excel and Word.
  • Extensive knowledge of payroll functions, including preparation, balancing, internal control, and payroll taxes.
  • Strong organizational and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to multi-task and work on multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Proven track record of payroll compliance and staying up-to-date on payroll regulations.
  • Experience with implementation projects.
