The Role

This is a hybrid position, requiring at least three days per week at our Vancouver studio. As a Technical Art Lead, you will partner with directors, character artists, animators, designers, and engineers to deliver high-quality assets within real-time development constraints.

You'll assess your team's needs, ensuring they can run efficiently and effectively, which will be key to our success. This role requires collaboration, proactive problem-solving, and a drive for cross-discipline environments.

Responsibilities
  • Collaborate with Directors, Character Artists, Animators, Designers, and Engineers: Work together to deliver high-quality assets within real-time development constraints.
  • Unblock Animator Potential: Consistently partner with animators to help them overcome challenges.
  • Solve Character Production Challenges: Support artists and animators in developing new techniques to solve pipeline issues and ensure clean handoffs.
  • Collaborate with Stakeholder Teams: Understand technical and creative requirements for assets and suggest solutions for technical issues.
  • Evaluate Downstream Considerations: Work with the concept team to discuss early considerations that affect downstream processes.
  • Ensure Outsourcing Partners' Productivity: Ensure outsourcing partners have the resources needed to be productive and informed.
  • Identify Workflow Deficiencies: Help identify workflow deficiencies and communicate requirements for improvement with the tools team.
  • Budget, Prioritize, and Organize Content Deliverables: Partner with production to budget, prioritize, assign, track, and organize all content deliverables.
  • Foster Collaboration: Ensure a constructive, collaborative relationship between the Modeling, Rigging, and Animation departments.
  • Create Prototype Assets: Oversee building of prototype assets where applicable to unblock teams.
  • Create Robust Controls: Ensure creation of robust, efficient, and intuitive body and facial controls.
  • Mentor Team Growth: Ensure team growth and mentorship in craft excellence.
  • Create Documentation and Feedback: Ensure creation of documentation, onboarding plans, and feedback for the technical production of characters, animation, and prop assets.
  • Communicate Effectively: Bring teams together through consistent and effective communication.
Key Qualifications
  • 7+ years of experience as a 3D technical artist in video games and film.
  • Strong understanding of rigging optimization and budgeting as they pertain to game engine workflows.
  • Experience working on at least one major project as a team lead.
  • Knowledge of setting up and maintaining 3D art pipelines and workflows.
  • Intimate knowledge of Maya and strong understanding of Maya's rigging tools.
  • Ability to pioneer practical production-oriented rig systems and workflows.
  • Deep knowledge of animator workflows.
  • Ability to apply technical skills to solve rigging and animation problems.
  • Expertise in Python and/or C++ – specifically as it applies to programming and tool creation in Maya (MEL and API).
  • Proficient with modeling and topology adjustments related to character deformations.
  • Working knowledge of shaders, specifically as they relate to animation.
  • Experience with Project Management (Jira, Confluence, SharePoint) tools.
  • Experience with Source Control (Perforce) software.

This position is eligible for benefits including a discretionary performance bonus program, health benefits, and generous time-off. The hiring range for this position is $100,000 - $144,000 CAD annually, and the final base salary compensation will be based on factors such as skills, education, and experience.
