Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Wastewater and Stormwater Collection System Maintenance Specialist to join our team at the City of Hamilton.

Key Responsibilities
  • Investigate and inspect the wastewater and stormwater collection system to identify and repair issues such as sewer back-ups, odours, and flooding.
  • Perform routine maintenance and repairs on the collection system, including confined space entries.
  • Monitor and control work and job site conditions to ensure the protection of workers, public pedestrian and vehicular traffic.
  • Assist in the management of wastewater cleaning and video contracts, including inspection and reporting.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, GIS, and sketches of the system to locate and identify system components.
  • Provide corrections and updates to wastewater and stormwater records, both manual and electronic.
  • Perform hydraulic flushing of sewers by connecting a hose to a fire hydrant, working alongside contractors.
  • Complete and arrange for job site restoration, including grass removal, sod, topsoil, concrete, and asphalt.
  • Apply products to sewers for the control of grease, odours, and rodents, and concrete void filler as required.
  • Notify dispatchers, contractors, other maintenance crews, and the public of wastewater and stormwater collection maintenance activities as required.
  • Operate equipment such as hand tools, generators, metal detectors, pumps, gas detectors, confined space entry equipment, portable flow monitors, digital cameras, GoPros, zoom cameras, and tablets.
  • Take samples as required and deliver them to the lab.
  • Configure traffic plans and set up signs and delineation for traffic control.
  • Drive a vehicle, load and unload parts and equipment, and maintain the vehicle in a clean and operational condition.
  • Perform regular inspection service and preventative maintenance on tools, equipment, and vehicles.
  • Locate storm sewers, sanitary sewers, combined sewers, force mains, cross connections, outfalls, inlets, manholes, and provide written reports.
  • Complete forms, manually or electronically, such as inspection reports and work orders.
  • Utilize computerized maintenance management systems for data acquisition.
  • Train new staff as required.
  • Maintain the yard, equipment, and inventory.
Qualifications
  • A current valid Wastewater Collection Licence - Operator in Training (OIT) with the Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks (MECP) is required.
  • A written Class 1 Wastewater Collection Licence with the Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks (MECP) Certification is preferred.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in wastewater and stormwater collection system maintenance or investigation is required.
  • Availability to work shifts, including weekends and nights, with a crew or independently with minimal supervision is required.
  • Lifting a minimum of 20 kgs, with an occasional requirement to lift up to 60 kgs, is required.
  • Technical knowledge of wastewater and stormwater collection systems and the ability to carry out, direct, and report on complex tasks is required.
  • Computer literacy and proficiency in Microsoft software (Word, Excel, and Outlook) and previous experience working with asset management software (Hansen preferred) is required.
  • Effective communication and courteous interaction with internal and external contacts, both verbally and in writing, is required.
  • A Class "G" driver's licence with a satisfactory driving record is required.
