Sterile Processing Technician

About the Role:
We are seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented SPD Aide to join our Sterile Processing Department. As a key member of our team, you will play a critical role in ensuring the highest standards of patient care and safety.
Key Responsibilities:
- Perform routine preventive maintenance on medical devices, equipment, and supplies, identifying damaged or malfunctioning items and reporting them for repair.
- Receive, sort, disassemble, clean, decontaminate, assemble, and sterilize medical devices, adhering to established policies and procedures.
- Load and operate sterilizing equipment, monitoring its operation and performing standard quality assurance tests to ensure effective sterilization.
- Assemble and scan medical devices based on computerized instrument tracking systems, printing labels for trays, peel pouches, and containers.
- Receive, fill, and deliver urgent and routine requests for medical devices, supplies, and equipment for the OR and other patient areas.
- Monitor and maintain established levels of sterile and non-sterile supplies, performing inventory counts, requisitioning supplies, and reporting shortages or problems.
- Adhere to departmental and hospital policies and procedures, performing routine cleaning and sanitation of workstations, storage areas, processing machines, and equipment.
- Perform related clerical duties, including maintaining records, answering telephones, filing, data entry, and information retrieval from computer systems.
- Assist with the orientation and training of new staff and students.
- Print pick lists using computerized systems, picking and distributing medical devices, sets, equipment, and supplies for medical and surgical procedures.
- Replenish procedure and specialty supply carts for various patient care areas on a regularly scheduled basis.
- Perform and record environmental safety monitoring activities.
- Transport medical and surgical equipment, case carts, and other items as required.
- Distribute and collect supplies, instruments, trays, and other items from throughout the hospital and reprocess them appropriately.
Requirements:
- Grade 12 or equivalent required.
- Completion of a Medical Device Reprocessing Certificate from a Canadian Accredited Community College.
- Current registration with the Medical Device Reprocessing Association of Ontario (MDRAO).
- Two years of recent experience in reprocessing, decontamination, sterilization, inspection, testing, setting up, maintaining, transporting, and distributing medical devices, equipment, and supplies.
- Good working knowledge of medical supplies, instruments, hardware, and sterilization equipment.
- Knowledge of surgical and medical terminology.
- Good command of the English language (both verbal and written).
- Demonstrated ability to follow instructions and work with minimal supervision.
- Ability to operate machinery, such as sterilizers, with training.
- Ability to meet the physical demands of the position, including lifting and pushing up to 25 pounds, and standing for up to 7.5 hours.
- Ability to work with organic and inorganic residues, such as blood and other bodily fluids and secretions.
- Demonstrated interpersonal skills and ability to work alone or as part of a team.
- Excellent attendance and discipline-free record required.
