Role Overview

We are seeking an exceptional Environmental Health Director to lead our climate change and sustainability efforts within the Interior Health Authority. This is a part-time opportunity with a flexible location within the region, requiring occasional travel.

About the Role

This pivotal position will focus on developing, implementing, and evaluating the Climate Change and Sustainability Roadmap for the Interior Health Authority. As the Medical Director of Climate Change and Sustainability, you will provide leadership in reducing environmental impacts of health services, enhancing clinical staff literacy, and promoting planetary health throughout the organization.

You will work collaboratively with key stakeholders, including clinical partners, executive leadership, and external agencies, to establish environmentally sustainable procurement practices and address climate justice by integrating medical expertise into the broader climate change discourse.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Collaborative Leadership:
  • Represent clinical partners within the IH Strategic Plan and IH Climate Change and Sustainability Roadmap.
  • Model integrated leadership by working effectively with clinical and operational counterparts.
  • Support IH Vice Presidents by ensuring physician-related issues specific to climate change and sustainability are addressed.
  • Work collaboratively with VP portfolios on strategic and operational plans related to climate change and sustainability.
Portfolio:
  • Participate in the development, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of strategic plans, particularly the IH Climate Change and Sustainability Roadmap.
  • Attend and participate in relevant VP portfolio's strategic and operational leadership team meetings.
  • Act as a spokesperson on climate change, health, and sustainability, including with media.
Other:
  • In alignment with IH's Occupational Health & Safety Program, employees shall adhere to all Occupational Health and Safety policies and procedures at all times.
  • Complete other tasks or duties as required by the CFO and VP Corporate Services or designate.
Requirements

To be successful in this role, you must have:

  • A current license as an MD in BC.
  • A Master's degree in healthcare administration, business administration, leadership, public health, environmental sustainability, planetary health, or an equivalent degree preferred.
  • An established track record in climate change and sustainability research, advocacy, and/or adoption of climate change and health and environmental sustainability into clinical practice.
  • At least 10 years of clinical practice experience and at least 5 years of progressively more responsible leadership in a healthcare environment.
