Saskatchewan Forest Specialist

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Forest Specialist to join our team in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan.
About the RoleThis is an exciting opportunity for a motivated and dedicated professional to contribute to the sustainable growth of Saskatchewan's forest sector. As a Forest Specialist, you will be responsible for supporting and providing expertise to provincial policy and standards related to scaling and revenue under the Forest Products Scaling Code Chapter.
Key Responsibilities- Review and approve sample scaling plans and amendments to ensure they meet provincial scaling standards used to determine volume harvested for calculation of dues and fees;
- Collaborate with industry to review issues and identify solutions that increase efficiencies while still meeting obligations and complying with the Forest Resources Management Act and Regulations;
- Analyze data and anticipate trends that may impact the integrity of the sampling programs;
- Provide direction to licensees and advice to policy makers regarding overall sampling intensities, cost of scaling, and provide higher statistical assurance and accuracy;
- Provide subject matter expertise to support and improve the timeliness and transparency of scaling analysis for calculation of dues and fees;
- Provide technical advice to other ministry staff to ensure compliance to operating procedures related to scaling and reporting data collection;
- Oversee and review activities carried out by staff related to the administration and maintenance of systems that collect and report scaling information and the delivery of the Licensed Scalers Course;
- Lead the scaling program's compliance and enforcement to incorporate scaling into the Branch Compliance Plan and Branch Compliance Report.
To be successful in this role, you will need:
- A Bachelor of Science degree in forestry or a related field;
- Significant experience in forest operations and scaling;
- Knowledge of the Forest Resources Management Act and Regulations as it relates to the scaling and reporting of wood volumes;
- An understanding of the environmental code and provincial standard as it relates to scaling;
- Experience in the development of policy in order to develop branch directives related to the volume control framework and scaling compliance planning and reporting processes;
- Ability to identify solutions to complex problems and recommend strategies or make decisions to address issues and concerns within a context of available resources, stringent timelines, divergent perspectives, and opposing viewpoints;
- An understanding of the Canadian Standards Association standards related to the measurement of primary wood products and other provincial jurisdiction scaling programs;
- Ability to manage multiple projects by prioritizing work, multi-tasking, and adapting to changing priorities;
- Ability to organize, check, and verify the work of other government employees, resulting in a team that can meet its goals and objectives and build organizational capacity for the future, while maintaining a healthy, productive, respectful, and safe work environment that is free of discrimination;
- Familiarity with individuals representing industry companies, licensees, forest product permit holders, and licensed scalers;
- Ability to interact professionally, respectfully, and use appropriate judgment to determine or mediate a solution when encountering difficult or confrontational clients or situations.
