Medical Laboratory Technologist Role

About the Role:
Sinai Health is seeking a Medical Laboratory Technologist to join our team in the Pathology & Laboratory Medicine, Transfusion Medicine Department at our Mount Sinai Hospital Campus.
This is a temporary full-time assignment for approximately eighteen months.
As a Medical Laboratory Technologist, you will perform Immunohematologic tests and duties accurately and reproducibly while exhibiting a working knowledge of the theory, methodology, and equipment required in order to aid in diagnosis and management of a patient.
Responsibilities include:
- Performing procedures related to reception, documentation, and storage of specimens
- Performing procedures related to ABO grouping, Rh, antibody screening, and cross-matching blood
- Performing procedures related to prenatal testing, new-born testing, and paternal phenotyping
- Performing antibody identification procedures
- Performing procedures related to receipt and storage of blood and blood components from the Canadian Blood Services
- Performing procedures related to release of prepared blood and blood components to the patient's ward or other location for therapeutic use
- Writing basic interpretation of test results and releasing these to the patient's physician/ward in a timely fashion
- Maintaining worksheets, logbooks, patient records, etc. as required by law and the policy of the laboratory
- Performing routine preventive maintenance of all equipment and being able to operate equipment effectively
- Maintaining written records of all quality control, instruments checks, etc.
- Preparing solutions and reagents applicable to the tests performed
- Exhibiting ability to prioritize work and respond to urgent unpredictable demands for blood bank services in STAT situations, consulting with peers, senior technologists, section supervisor, or section head when appropriate relative to abnormal results, panic results, or other concerns
- Exhibiting a co-operative attitude with other staff, congeniality, flexibility in hours of work, reliability, and punctuality, ability to work at a variety of duties, and flexibility in learning new procedures
- MAY assist with demonstrating procedures to new staff or students as requested
- MAY participate in educational and informational programs
- Communicates effectively with physicians, nurses, and other hospital personnel - includes basic interpretation of laboratory test results and explanations of limitations of the test procedure
- MAY refer tests to other testing facilities for confirmation, etc. after consultation with a senior technologist
- Participates in Quality Assurance Program
- Understands the consequences and impact of errors on the patient
- Acknowledges responsibility for his/her work activities
- Maintains patient confidentiality
- Exhibits understanding and practices safe work habits
- Exhibits initiative and independence of action acceptable for his/her level of training and experience
- Performs other duties as requested by the Charge Technologist or Section Head
Requirements:
- Active General Registration in good standing with the College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of Ontario (CMLTO) and the Canadian Society for Medical Laboratory Science (CSMLS)
- 2 years of recent experience and demonstrated achievements in Blood Transfusion (preferred)
- Proficiency in the use of MS Office (Word, Excel, Access) (preferred)
- Proficiency in the use of Laboratory Information System (preferred)
- Demonstrated satisfactory work performance and attendance record
- In accordance with accreditation standards, employment is conditional upon applicant demonstrating proof of visual colour discrimination ability pertinent to the essential duties of the job
