Strathcona Resources Ltd. is a Calgary-based oil and gas production and development company focused on maximizing oil and gas recovery from its low decline, high free cash flow oil and gas resource base. We are seeking a skilled Geologist to join our Cold Lake Thermal team in Calgary, Alberta.

The successful candidate will provide expert geological analysis, subsurface interpretations, recommendations, and technical work to contribute to grow area production and reserves through optimization and drilling of existing and new plays.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop play maps and depositional models to generate and verify drill locations and development opportunities.
  • Interpret stratigraphic and structural cross-sections to formulate subsurface geologic models.
  • Interpret subsurface formation isopach, structure, and facies maps to illustrate reservoir characteristics.
  • Integration of petrography, core, drill cuttings, petrophysical analysis and geophysical interpretation to accurately characterize SAGD reservoirs.
  • Detailed log analysis for reservoir mapping and volumetrics.
  • Working closely with geologists, geophysicists, and engineers to optimize bitumen recovery by analyzing steam chamber development and suggesting optimizations to well operations.
  • Well placement, planning, and geological drilling operations for stratigraphic, observation, and horizontal wells.
  • Generation of geological prognoses for SAGD development.
  • Knowledge and experience in directional well planning and geosteering.
  • Direct involvement in annual reserves evaluation process including collaboration with third party reserves auditors.
  • Participation and contribution in annual development and budget planning.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum 8 years of geological experience with at least 5 years working on Thermal SAGD Development projects.
  • Bachelor of Science in Geology.
  • APPEG member in good standing.
  • Clear understanding of the depositional history of the WCSB and how it relates to hydrocarbon accumulations.
  • Attention to detail with respect to log analysis, interpretation, and stratigraphic correlations.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills – adaptable to a wide range of personalities.
  • Thrive in a collaborative team setting, intrinsically motivated, enthusiastic, and a positive attitude.
  • Good verbal and written communication and presentation skills.
  • Advanced computer literacy with geological software – geoScout, Petrel, etc.
  • Sound understanding of clastic depositional systems, Mannville stratigraphy, and thermal SAGD development.

Work Environment:

  • This position is based at Strathcona's Calgary head office.
  • Occasional travel to the field and core storage may be required.
