About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled Registered Nurse to join our team as a Mental Health Nurse. In this role, you will provide essential health-related advice and support to educators within schools by developing individual care plans for patients with mental health and addictions needs.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide medical consultation to educators regarding issues such as medication management for individual students, particularly those with complex medical conditions concurrent with mental illness or addictions
  • Advise educators on potential side-effects of different classes of medications
  • Provide support and/or intervention in complex issues such as refusal to attend treatment, self-harm, suicide, or violent behaviour
  • Support educators to meet the complex medical and mental health needs of students who require extra supports for health and/or safety concerns of self and/or others
  • Provide the support of a health professional in helping students and/or parent(s) to access services such as primary health care or a children's mental health centre and provide education about options for treatment
  • Provide essential health-related advice and support to the Mental Health leaders in developing comprehensive board plans to address a collaborative response to the mental health needs of students
  • Act as a spokesperson as required, and interpret the role of HCCSS to patients, health care professionals and to the public. Ensure positive public relations and effective co-ordination of services through ongoing liaison and participation on internal and external committees
  • Participate in establishing, maintaining, and monitoring standards for the Care Coordinators. This includes committee work and active participation and contribution to quality initiatives
  • Assess for and promotes a safe environment for patients, caregivers, family members, and staff. Adhere to health and safety policies/practices developed and implemented by HCCSS
  • Participate in the orientation of new staff, educators and students within district school boards
  • May be required to perform other duties as assigned with service providers and other community partners
Requirements
  • University degree preferred in Nursing and/or equivalent
  • Registered Nurse in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario
  • Knowledge of the mental health and addictions service system
  • Recent clinical experience (preferably within the last two (2) years) in providing mental health and/or addictions services
  • Knowledge of the mental health and addictions service system and recent (preferably within the last (2) years) clinical experience in providing mental health and/or addictions services for children and youth considered an asset
  • Minimum of two (2) years' recent (preferably within the last two (2) years) experience as a Registered Nurse
  • Solid knowledge of health care related legislation and practices
  • Proficiency with computerized information systems
