Pathology Assistant Job Description

At William Osler Health System, we are committed to providing a safe and supportive healthcare network for our patients and staff. As a Pathology Assistant, you will play a vital role in our laboratory team, working closely with pathologists and other healthcare professionals to ensure accurate and timely diagnosis.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform a variety of duties required by the Pathology department, including examining, describing, dissecting, weighing, and photographing small and complex large gross surgical specimens of all tissue types.
  • Assist with or perform autopsies under pathologists' supervision.
  • Work independently or as a team member, demonstrating high motivation and independent judgment.
  • Develop and maintain strong knowledge of anatomy and tissue processing.
  • Utilize computer proficiency, including Meditech and Paradigm, to support laboratory operations.
  • Communicate effectively with colleagues and patients, demonstrating strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Contribute to a team environment, showcasing strong interpersonal skills and a high degree of professionalism.
  • Problem-solve effectively, working under pressure to maintain high productivity and competence.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor of Science in Biology and/or Master's of Pathology or equivalent education with a minimum of two years' experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
  • Strong knowledge of anatomy and tissue processing.
  • Demonstrated skills and ability in examining, describing, dissecting, weighing, and photographing small and complex large gross surgical specimens of all tissue types.
  • Assist with or perform autopsies under pathologists' supervision.
  • Proven ability to work independently or as a team member, with high motivation and independent judgment.
  • Familiarity with equipment and tissue processing.
  • Demonstrated computer proficiency, including Meditech and Paradigm.
  • Proven written and oral communication skills.
  • Proven excellence working in a team environment, with strong interpersonal skills and a high degree of professionalism.
  • Demonstrated strong problem-solving ability.
  • Demonstrated ability to work under pressure and maintain high productivity and competence.
  • American Association of Pathology Assistants registration an asset.
  • Required to work at and travel between all Osler sites.

Additional Information:

Hours: Currently Days/Evenings/Nights, including weekends and statutory holidays (subject to change in accordance with operational requirements).
