The Opportunity

The procurement specialist will work from Abbott Canada's head office, applying their experience and procurement knowledge to execute purchasing and supply management strategies created by category managers. They will work with customers, internal and external, and divisions to solve issues and drive high levels of customer service. This role will work across multiple verticals, responsible for operations and tactical work with various categories. The procurement specialist has delegated authority to commit company funds while contributing cost savings and partnerships with suppliers and internal customers.

Key Responsibilities

  • Select reliable sources of supply that align with category management strategies, receive bids as necessary, evaluate quotations, and make final vendor selection in conjunction with divisions of Abbott Canada and affiliates.
  • First-line responder pivots between strategy, operations, and transactional sourcing.
  • Execute against category strategies and work in the guidance of strategic category leaders.
  • Manage SOWs/RFIs/Ordering documents.
  • Draft key purchase orders and agreements in a manner that ensures all Abbott requirements, terms, and conditions are appropriately documented.
  • Conduct regular supplier spend analysis to identify volume leveraging and cost improvement opportunities.
  • Manage day-to-day supply issues.
  • Analyze possible solutions using standard procedures and recommend process improvements as appropriate.
  • Communicate pertinent information to both internal customers and suppliers to keep apprised and to prevent problems.
  • Execute ad-hoc/one-off buys.
  • Support PO conversion - non-transactional and related negotiations.
  • Educate stakeholders on existing solutions to enable performance and tech tools development.
  • Lead resolution on supplier issues and invoice errors.
  • Enable supplier integration and track KPIs.
  • Drive savings outcomes. Collaboration with functions.
  • Create and implement RFPs.
  • Communicate with appropriate departments to clarify requests and obtain appropriate supporting documentation for the purchase.
  • Implement agreed purchasing strategies for categories.
  • Seek and support business relationships with diverse suppliers.
  • Prepare and issue monthly operating comments, KPIs, and cost savings reports.
  • Process sourcing requests within Ariba and respond to procurement-related queries in a timely manner.
  • Meet regularly with divisional key stakeholders and support functions to ensure good customer satisfaction and continuous improvement. Provides Ariba Guided Buying training and updates to requisitioners as required.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree.
  • 5 to 8 years of experience in purchasing.
  • The incumbent must be able to communicate well in English (50% of the time), as their duties require interaction with stakeholders and colleagues outside Quebec and Canada.
  • Intermediate knowledge of PC application software such as Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), Outlook, and ERP systems is required.
  • The position requires evaluation and analysis of quantitative and qualitative data on an ongoing basis. Must be able to gather, analyze, and apply relevant data obtained from a variety of appropriate sources.
  • Evaluative, creative, and decision-making skills are key to the position.
  • Strong communication and collaborative skills are required, coupled with an ability to sell ideas to others, including the ability to make presentations.
  • Position handles confidential information daily.
  • Strong people skills, strong problem-solving skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • SCMP (Supply Chain Management Professional) or other equivalent designation.
  • In addition to the above computer skills, the job requires daily use of ERP systems such as SAP Ariba. SAP Ariba Procurement software experience is desirable.
