At Intact Financial Corporation, we're seeking an experienced In-House Legal Counsel I to join our growing team. As a key member of our legal department, you'll play a critical role in handling insurance litigation files of varying complexities from beginning to conclusion.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Handle insurance litigation files of varying complexities from beginning to conclusion.
  • Draft opinions, pleadings, affidavits, and other legal documents to support applications, mediations, judicial settlement conferences, and trials.
  • Independently prepare and conduct applications, discoveries, mediations, arbitration, pre-trial conferences, and trials.
  • Prepare and present legal educational seminars to the claims department and assist Intact colleagues from other departments on inquiries.
  • Maintain productive and effective communications with the claims department and adjusters.

Requirements:

  • Member in good standing of the Law Society.
  • Minimum of 2 years of insurance litigation experience.
  • Experience in legal research and writing, including authorship of legal opinions.
  • Experience in drafting pleadings, conducting discoveries, mediations, application documents, and pre-hearing memoranda.
  • Proficiency in alternative dispute resolution (ADR) processes.
  • Trial experience, particularly independent trial experience, is a definite asset.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, combined with research and negotiation experience.
  • Superior organizational skills, including the ability to handle multiple case files simultaneously.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build effective client relationships.
