Mental Health Nurse Job Description

Job Summary

Fraser Health is seeking a skilled Mental Health Nurse to join our team. As a Mental Health Nurse, you will provide treatment and care management services to individuals with mental illness and concurrent disorders.

Key Responsibilities

  • Coordinate care for clients by collaborating with the interprofessional care team, performing intake functions, conducting mental health assessments, and developing comprehensive treatment plans.
  • Administer prescribed medications, monitor and assess clients' mental state, and provide education to clients and their families about management and treatment of specific psychiatric conditions.
  • Provide treatment services, including crisis intervention, individual counselling, and education, according to a variety of theoretical models.
  • Act as a client advocate to protect and promote clients' rights to autonomy, respect, privacy, dignity, and access to information.
  • Consult and collaborate with members of the interprofessional care team to identify and resolve issues, adjust care plans as required, and address changes in client condition.

Requirements

  • Graduation from an approved School of Nursing or Psychiatric Nursing.
  • Two years recent related experience providing treatment services to individuals with mental health and/or concurrent disorders.
  • Current practicing registration as a Registered Nurse and/or Registered Psychiatric Nurse with the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM).
  • Valid Class 5 BC Driver's License and access to a personal vehicle with appropriate insurance coverage.

Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to complete initial and ongoing mental health and substance use client assessments and provide nursing care through appropriate technical, therapeutic, and safety interventions.
  • Knowledge of mental illness and substance use treatment, psychopharmacology, and legislation and government policies and procedures related to mental health and substance use practices.
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing with clients, families/care givers, the public, medical staff, and members of the interprofessional care team.
