Job Summary

We are seeking an experienced Investment Analyst to join our team at BDC Capital, the investment arm of BDC. This role will involve evaluating and investing in potential deals, as well as monitoring our current portfolio.

About Us

BDC Capital is Canada's largest and most active venture capital fund investor, having invested in over 40% of all venture capital funds in Canada. Our team has a dual mandate of investing in high-performing established managers while supporting the next generation of emerging general partners contributing to the depth and diversity of the Canadian GP ecosystem.

Key Responsibilities
  • Evaluate fund investments based on market trends, performance of similar funds, and general characteristics such as average deal sizes, total fund size, portfolio companies, years in the market, management fees, and reinvested capital.
  • Manage operational tasks in due diligence, including booking meetings, background research, and minute-taking.
  • Review valuation models and financial pro formas of fund performance, benchmarking various fund-specific metrics (e.g., TVPI, DPI, Fund IRR, RVPI), and portfolio-specific metrics (e.g., portfolio history, considering exit dates, exit rationales, value add, MOIC, and IRR per company).
  • Assist in reference calls with fund managers, referring sources such as industry experts, and prospective fund portfolio companies.
  • Conduct routine background checks, KYC, and AML.
Requirements
  • 1-3 years of experience in financial analysis and private investments, preferably in finance roles or advisory positions.
  • Bachelor's degree in Commerce, Economics, Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM). Other profiles will be considered if they have strong analytical skills.
  • CFA charter or progress towards it would be an asset.
  • Previous funds investment experience as a limited partner will be valuable.
Technical Skills
  • Strong Excel skills, particularly in building financial models with sensitivity analysis and scenario modeling, as well as data analysis.
  • Good English language writing skills to articulate complex logical and financial analysis into written memos.
  • Fair ability to use MS-suite applications, mainly Word and PowerPoint.
  • Technology skills such as Python and/or VBA coding will be an asset.
