Electrical Systems Designer

Smith + Andersen is a trusted Canadian consulting engineering firm with a reputation for delivering efficient, sustainable, and reliable design and engineering solutions. We are seeking an Electrical Systems Designer to join our team in Hamilton, ON.

The successful candidate will have a diploma or degree in electrical building services engineering and 1-5 years of experience in the field. They will be responsible for designing building systems in accordance with office standards, municipal or provincial building codes, and other applicable standards. The ideal candidate will have knowledge and experience working with Autodesk Revit 2017 or newer, as well as exposure to electrical layouts and systems.

The Electrical Systems Designer will work closely with our team of engineers and designers to deliver projects on time and within budget. They will be responsible for preparing drawings, specifications, and reports necessary to deliver a project, as well as checking layouts and services for continuity. The successful candidate will have strong verbal and written communication skills and be able to work independently as well as contribute to the team.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Design building systems in accordance with office standards, municipal or provincial building codes, and other applicable standards.
  • Prepare drawings, specifications, and reports necessary to deliver a project.
  • Check layouts and services for continuity.
  • Develop lighting layouts and coordinate with other disciplines.
  • Develop power distribution layouts and sizing, as well as layouts of electrical/switch/transformer rooms.
  • Perform electrical load calculations for base building projects.
  • Respond to both internal and external communication regarding project or design status.
  • Liaise with all project consultants; coordinate design requirements with all disciplines and supervise drawings between other disciplines.
  • Design electrical building systems directly in Revit/CAD; adhering to company BIM/CAD standards.
  • Work with clash/coordination reports, assisting with model audits and overall health of the model.
  • Liaise with suppliers and/or manufacturers for design support, equipment and component selection.
  • Assist in construction administration by reviewing equipment shop drawings and conducting site visits, site reviews and preparing change notices, site instructions, etc.

Requirements:
  • Diploma or degree in electrical building services engineering.
  • 1-5 years of experience in the field of electrical building services, in a consulting engineering role.
  • Knowledge and experience working with Autodesk Revit 2017 or newer, as well as exposure to electrical layouts and systems.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Able to work independently, as well as contribute to the team.
