Course Overview: This course will delve into the complexities of forensic mental health issues within the criminal justice system, exploring the nature and extent of mental illness in society and the legal, social, and ethical implications that arise when a mentally disordered individual interacts with the justice system.
Course Objectives: Students will gain a comprehensive understanding of the medical and legal definitions of mental disorder, their relationship, and the criteria for state-compelled treatment. They will also examine the changing views of the justice system's duty to accommodate victims and witnesses with mental health issues, fitness to stand trial, and the defense of not criminally responsible.
Course Structure: The course will consist of lectures, which will be delivered in-person, and practicals/tutorials. The estimated course enrolment is 40 students, and the estimated TA support is approximately 60 hours.
Salary and Benefits: The salary for this position will be $4,728.95 for Sessional Lecturer I, $4,690.35 for Sessional Lecturer I - Long Term, $5,060.89 for Sessional Lecturer II, and $5,181.38 for Sessional Lecturer II - Long Term. Please note that the rates stipulated in the collective agreement may vary from the rates stated in this posting.
Qualifications and Experience: The successful candidate will hold a Ph.D. (completed or ABD with active student status at issuing institution) in Psychology or Law or a closely related topic, or an LLB (completed) with specialization and experience in Law & Evidence in the field of Forensic Sciences. Relevant qualification, professional designation, or professional experience is an asset.
Responsibilities: The instructor will be responsible for preparing and delivering course material, preparing and delivering assignments, tests, and/or exams, supervising teaching assistants, marking students' work, submitting grades to university officials, and holding regular office hours.
