As a Claims Consultant on our National EBI/Energy Specialty Claims team, you'll play a crucial role in handling complex claims through all distribution channels.

About the Role

We're seeking a highly skilled Claims Consultant to join our growing team. As a key member of our team, you'll be responsible for the direct handling and monitoring of first-party claims with some third-party complex claims having exposures in Canada and internationally.

The types of losses may include energy, equipment breakdown, commercial property, environment liability, and additional specialty claims.

You'll manage, investigate, analyze, negotiate, and resolve large and complex commercial, energy, and equipment breakdown property claims generally with exposures over $1 million involving specialized kinds of loss.

Your Key Responsibilities
  • Manage and monitor complex claims, ensuring timely and effective resolution;
  • Engage and manage consultants, independent adjusters, accounts, and engineers to confirm coverage, determine liability, and assess damages;
  • Mentor, guide, and provide technical advice to regional file handlers to ensure consistent and effective claims handling and support long-term succession planning;
  • Train colleagues on complex claims handling;
  • Work with Underwriting and Loss Prevention to identify potential risks, hazards, and trends;
  • Provide excellent customer service to brokers, customers, and colleagues;
  • Deliver and exceed on key performance indicators related to loss development and loss adjustment expenses, claims leakage control, and expense management;
  • Leverage your expertise in a creative, continuous improvement environment to support a model of best practice operations;
  • Effectively negotiate claims when appropriate;
  • Attend settlement conferences and trials;
  • Attend loss locations and other broker and client meetings as needed;

You'll work closely with our team to deliver results and drive excellence in claims handling.

Requirements

To succeed in this role, you'll need:

  • 10+ years of experience in direct claim handling, with a minimum of 5 years in complex equipment breakdown and energy claims;
  • Technical expertise acquired through extensive experience in direct claim handling;
  • A critical thinking approach to complex problems in time-sensitive situations;
  • Excellent communication skills to foster favorable business relationships and provide clear guidance to clients;
  • A problem-solving mindset to gather information, evaluate situations, and negotiate next steps toward a solution;
  • Ability to adapt to changing needs and understand the need for flexibility and agility;
  • A planner's mentality to effectively organize and establish an effective strategy;
  • A strong collaborator with a passion for mentoring and coaching others;
  • Appropriate knowledge of relevant regulatory and legal requirements applicable to this position;
  • An undergraduate degree or CIP designation (asset);
  • Flexible travel as needed;
