About the Role:
Altus Group (UK) Limited is seeking a highly skilled Tax Consultant to join their team in Vancouver. As a Tax Consultant, you will be responsible for providing expert property assessment and tax consulting services to clients with minimal oversight from senior staff. Your primary duties will include project management, managing deliverables, meeting deadlines, and collaborating with other business units to identify synergy opportunities.
Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct market research and analyze external data sources to contribute to the local office's ongoing market data research.
- Teach junior staff how to collect market research and data, and use this information to identify potential opportunities for senior staff to pursue.
- Prepare initial valuation opinions for small or less complex properties and support senior staff on more complex properties.
- Reconcile and support a final opinion of value for assessment purposes, considering governing legislation and equity in relation to comparable assessments.
- Perform property inspections to validate site specs, neighborhood, and survey the building or land, collecting qualitative information for use in hearings and/or client reports.
- Propose initial views on the merits of appeals to be reviewed by senior staff and attend site visits to develop an understanding of what to look for to build a case to contest the value of a property or building.
- Review and assist junior team members with setting up and preparing initial reports, including assessment appeal reports, review panel, and Appeal Board hearing materials.
- Manage small local client files, operating in one jurisdiction with fewer than five properties, and make up the bottom 10% of Tax Canada's revenue in the specific geography.
- Support senior staff in managing the appeal process for approximately 100-250 appeals per year.
- Apply technical skills and industry-specific knowledge to provide property assessment services to existing clients under the direction and guidance of senior staff.
Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree in Real Estate, Law, Business, or Economics preferred.
- Minimum 3 years of relevant experience required.
- Obtained or working towards designation and paralegal license in Ontario.
- Understanding of how taxes are determined from assessments returns.
- Understanding of tax legislation pertaining to tax classifications, exemptions from taxation, and tax phase-in tools.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Outlook, Excel, and Adobe Acrobat.
- Quantitative and analytical skills, including financial modeling in Excel and Tableau, and technical knowledge in all three approaches to valuations.
- Understanding of appeals process and applicable legislation.
- Valid driver's license with a clean driver's abstract.
