Job Overview:

We are seeking a motivated Summer Student to join our Transmission Field Operations team as a Substation Technologist. This is an exciting opportunity to gain hands-on experience in the operation and maintenance of AltaLink's transmission substations in Alberta.

Responsibilities:

  • Operate, inspect, and maintain substation equipment associated with the AltaLink transmission system.
  • Provide maintenance planning, scheduling, and Altalink Control Center staff with information regarding equipment status and recommend improvements or replacements.
  • Trouble response for stations facilities in the area.
  • Assist and support other disciplines as required.
  • Assist the Substations team on Capital upgrade and replacement work.
  • Assist the Substation team with new technologies such as SVC and PST.
  • Develop and implement a plan for substation work including review and understanding of work packages and related work practices, procedures, policies/standards and regulations.
  • Ensure development and documentation of Safe Work Plans as required.
  • Coordinate and provide emergency response to system emergencies as required.

Requirements:

  • Full-time returning to studies student enrolled in a related and recognized Technologist Diploma program preferably Electrical Engineering Technology.
  • Must have the ability to work in adverse weather conditions and have a valid Class 5 driver's license.
  • Proven ability/experience in the above noted responsibilities.
  • Be competent and comfortable working with computers and spreadsheets.
  • Willing to develop skills and a career in the Substation Technologist discipline.
  • Effective communication (written and verbal) and interpersonal skills to interface with team members and customers to promote positive outcomes.
  • Ability to work independently and part of a team.
  • Demonstrated problem solving and analytical skills with the ability to work within strict deadlines.
  • Demonstrated willingness to work safely and show concern for environmental, health and safety issues in the workplace.
  • Strong mechanical as well as electrical aptitude.
  • Must have the ability to work in adverse weather conditions and comfortable working at heights.
  • Willing to accept out of town working conditions and must have a valid Class 5 driver's license.
  • This is a physically demanding position. To ensure we are meeting our safety requirements, you are required to be in good physical condition, have good manual dexterity and physical coordination and meet all physical fitness, medical and weight requirements.
  • Knowledge and adherence to safety practices, procedures, and standards required.
  • Proven track record of good attendance and performance.
