Empire Life is seeking a seasoned Backend Developer to join its Back Office Development team. With a focus on delivering high-quality, production-ready applications, this role offers the opportunity to make a meaningful impact on our customers and society as a whole.

The successful candidate will lead the delivery of new and existing applications and services to production, working closely with infrastructure, security, and operations teams (DevOps). Key responsibilities include:

  • Contribute to automated testing with unit, functional, and behavioral testing
  • Proactively work with internal network and security teams to monitor applicable applications and services
  • Troubleshoot problems and ensure resolution of issues
  • Research and investigate improvements; analyze and provide findings and recommendations to management

To be successful in this role, you will require:

  • 5+ years' experience in back office web development
  • Practical working knowledge and expertise in back office software development
  • Knowledge and experience with continuous integration and continuous deployment (CI/CD) including Github Actions and DevOps
  • Automated testing (unit, functional, behavioural testing)
  • Loading testing applications to ensure acceptable performance according to agreed upon SLA's

In addition to these requirements, we welcome candidates who possess:

  • Programming language proficiency in Kotlin, Python, React or Javascript, Java, HTML, and CSS
  • Database schema design and SQL query experience
  • REST API development
  • Event-driven architecture programming with Kafka or equivalent
  • Documentation of delivered software with architectural decision records (ADR's) and OpenAPI specifications
  • Google Cloud Platform (GCP) or equivalent cloud provider experience
  • Experience with agile development methodologies (e.g. Scrum) and related platforms (Jira)
