Position Overview

Telesat is a prominent global satellite operator, renowned for delivering dependable and secure satellite communication solutions to a diverse clientele, including broadcasting, telecommunications, corporate, and governmental sectors. With over five decades of experience, Telesat is recognized for its engineering excellence and exceptional customer service.

As we prepare for the launch of Telesat Lightspeed, our groundbreaking Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite network, we are seeking a proficient LEO Operations Research Specialist. This innovative network, set to enhance global broadband connectivity for enterprise users, will offer high capacity, security, resilience, and affordability, all while ensuring ultra-low latency and fiber-like speeds.

Key Responsibilities

  • Utilize optimization expertise to accurately formulate complex optimization challenges and implement them within the Telesat Lightspeed System Model, enhancing performance and operational efficiency.
  • Lead the development of optimization methodologies to be applied in Lightspeed system analysis and operations.
  • Innovate new formulations to accommodate emerging features, constraints, and objectives within the System Model, aiming to maximize performance while minimizing runtime.
  • Employ mathematical optimization techniques, including Linear Programming and Mixed Integer Programming, to create near-optimal solvers for system engineering and operational software.
  • Conduct objective evaluations of algorithms and formulations to ensure optimal performance.
  • Engage in restructuring the System Model to enhance performance and maintainability, adhering to operations research best practices.
  • Collaborate closely with fellow engineers in the development of the System Model.
  • Work with cross-functional teams to effectively integrate the System Model into business applications as necessary.
  • Contribute to the design and development of essential components such as resource allocation mechanisms, network management systems, and compliance mechanisms.
  • Provide technical leadership and guidance on operations research best practices to system engineers.
  • Stay informed about emerging technologies and trends in operations research, contributing innovative ideas to the Lightspeed constellation system.
  • Ensure the creation and maintenance of high-quality documentation as required.
  • Collaborate with external partners and stakeholders to ensure project success.

Qualifications

  • Master's or Ph.D. in Operations Research, Applied Mathematics, or a related discipline.
  • A minimum of 10 years of relevant experience in operations research.
  • Proficiency in commercial solvers such as Cplex, Gurobi, or Fico Xpress, as well as non-commercial solvers like Coin-OR or SCIP.
  • Strong foundation in optimization techniques for Mixed Integer Programming (MIP) problems.
  • Experience in programming languages such as Matlab, Python, Java, C, or C++.
  • Background in applying Operations Research to solve business challenges.
  • Experience with space systems is advantageous.

Decision-Making and Influence

  • This role will involve making recommendations that influence the design of the Lightspeed system.
  • The position does not include direct reports.

The successful candidate must be eligible to work in Canada and obtain necessary security clearances.
