Position Overview: Traveling Mental Health Counselor Level 2

The Sioux Lookout First Nations Health Authority (SLFNHA) is dedicated to providing comprehensive mental health services to First Nation children, youth, adults, and families across 33 remote northern communities. The Nodin Mental Health Services (MHS) department plays a crucial role in this mission, offering a variety of essential services including intake assessments, community counseling, crisis intervention, and traditional healing.

The role of the Mental Health Counselor involves extensive travel to First Nations communities, delivering essential counseling services to individuals and families. Responsibilities include providing support and guidance, crisis management, group therapy, and case management. This position requires close collaboration with local resources and aims to enhance community capacity. When not traveling, the counselor may also provide services at the outpatient mental health facility based in Sioux Lookout.

Qualifications:
  • Preference will be given to individuals of First Nations ancestry (OHRC, Part II, Special Employment)
  • A minimum of a high school diploma and completion of a recognized mental health training program
  • Registration with a professional body is required or must be obtained within one year of employment
  • At least one year of relevant experience in mental health counseling
  • Familiarity with various therapeutic approaches (e.g., cognitive behavioral therapy, group therapy, motivational interviewing)
  • Ability to adopt a holistic approach, emphasizing client strengths
  • Strong interpersonal skills to build and maintain effective relationships with clients and partners
  • Training in suicide risk assessment, trauma-informed care, and substance abuse treatment is advantageous
  • Experience working with diverse populations, including children, youth, adults, and families
  • Knowledge of mandatory reporting laws
  • Experience with high-risk client assessments and appropriate interventions
  • Proficient in computer use and typing
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Attention to detail and accuracy are essential
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, organizational, and time management skills
  • Ability to work independently and adapt to changing circumstances
  • Effective self-care strategies to maintain personal well-being
  • Understanding of the culture and mental health needs of First Nations communities in the Sioux Lookout area
  • Ability to communicate in one or more First Nations dialects is an asset
  • Previous experience in First Nations communities is preferred
  • Capability to fulfill the job requirements consistently.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Travel extensively to provide counseling, support, and crisis intervention in First Nations communities
  • Conduct mental health evaluations, assist clients in goal setting, and develop tailored treatment plans
  • Assess risk factors and manage clinical risks while creating safety plans
  • Facilitate therapeutic processes to help clients develop coping strategies
  • Focus on recovery and behavior modification during counseling sessions
  • Regularly evaluate client progress and adjust treatment interventions as needed
  • Coordinate care and collaborate with community resources and specialists
  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation of all clinical interactions
  • Ensure client confidentiality and secure handling of all records
  • Adhere to reporting obligations as required
  • Lead group therapy sessions and mental wellness workshops
  • Engage in regular supervision and team meetings for case reviews and professional development
  • Plan community visits and schedules to ensure timely service delivery
  • Participate in ongoing education regarding mental health issues
  • Develop and present training and group work as needed
  • Foster positive working relationships with community mental health workers and provide mentorship
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by the supervisor.
