Job Overview

The Welder/Fabricator (Metal Fabricator) is a critical role within our Elliot Lake operations, responsible for creating and repairing parts used in the construction of heavy mining equipment. This position requires a high level of skill and attention to detail, as the individual will be working with structural steel, plate, and various ferrous and non-ferrous metals to produce high-quality products.

Key Responsibilities
  • Set up and operate trade machinery, such as oxy-fuel cutting torches, grinders, and drills, to bend, punch, cut, and form metal components.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, drawings, and schematics to ensure accurate production.
  • Perform calculations and apply shop formulas and other mathematical methods to develop patterns and lay out structural steel.
  • Plan the sequence of tasks and determine the most efficient methods for cutting steel.
  • Assemble and fit metal sections and plates to form sub-units or complete units used in the assembly process.
  • Fasten components together using tack welding, bolting, and riveting.
  • Use manual or semi-automatic welding equipment to fuse metal pieces using processes such as gas tungsten arc (TIG or GTAW), gas metal arc (MIG or GMAW), flux-cored arc (FCAW), shielded metal arc (SMAW), and oxy-acetylene (OAW).
  • Operate manual or semi-automatic flame-cutting equipment.
  • Operate metal shaping machines, such as brakes, shears, and other metal straightening and bending machines.
  • Weld components in flat, vertical, horizontal, or overhead positions.
  • Monitor the fitting, burning, and welding processes to avoid overheating parts or causing warping, shrinking, distortion, or expansion of material.
  • Clamp, hold, tack-weld, heat-bend, grind, or bolt component parts to achieve the required configurations and positions for welding.
  • Follow documented welding work instructions.
Qualifications/Requirements
  • College diploma in Welding and Fabrication technician or equivalent.
  • Minimum 2 years' experience in Welding and Fitting trade.
  • Canadian Welding Bureau certification is an asset.
  • Familiarity with the use of Jigs & fixtures.
  • Possess a solid understanding of welding equipment and welding accessories.
  • Ability to safely operate manual or semi-automatic welding equipment within production facility.
  • Knowledge of arithmetic, geometry, and their applications in fabrication.
  • Knowledge of the practical application of engineering science and technology.
  • Knowledge of raw materials, production processes, quality control, costs, and other techniques for maximizing the effective manufacture and distribution of goods.
  • Ability to read blue prints, drawings, schematics.
  • Good communication skills to work with multi-dimensional team.
  • Willingness to learn.
