Veterinary Technologist for Poultry Operations

Position Overview:

This role is integral to the operations of a poultry veterinary practice, encompassing responsibilities that require the designation of Registered Veterinary Technologist. Key duties include the management of veterinary pharmaceuticals and the facilitation of various veterinary activities within the poultry sector. This position does not entail weekend work.

The incumbent will also assist the Maple Leaf Ag-Ops Division with tasks such as sample submissions, liaising with diagnostic labs, overseeing vaccine inventory, and generating purchase orders in the SAP system. Coordination of vaccination procedures, blood sampling, and interdepartmental communication will also be essential. Participation in cross-departmental projects, such as monitoring plant condemnations and collecting samples from farms, is expected.

The ideal candidate will possess 1-2 years of experience in the food animal sector, particularly in sample management, shipping, and timely reporting of results.

Candidates with extensive poultry production experience (over 5 years) may be considered in lieu of the Registered Veterinary Technologist designation.

Daily Responsibilities:

Dispensing of antimicrobials and other veterinary medications in compliance with regulatory standards Maintaining accurate veterinary records as per industry requirements Supporting compliance with veterinary practice regulations Conducting in-house projects related to poultry diagnostics and sample monitoring Organizing and coordinating sampling schedules for various poultry farms Serving as Biological Safety Officer for the poultry laboratory Executing laboratory tests and managing results within the Laboratory Information Management System Overseeing Quality Management protocols Assisting the Veterinarian with necropsies Managing the disposal of biological waste Ensuring cleanliness in biological hazard areas Keeping detailed records for samples and reports Shipping samples and creating laboratory submissions Preparing sample kits in an aseptic manner Managing inventory of supplies and executing SAP transactions as needed Maintaining medication and supply inventories Developing and maintaining standard operating procedures for poultry veterinary practices and laboratories Keeping equipment maintenance logs and conducting daily checks Supporting prescription preparation Scheduling farm visits Assisting with Quality Assurance programs and biosecurity measures Contributing to data entry and analysis, including pathogen results and performance metrics Conducting sampling and environmental monitoring in poultry barns as required Assisting with training and verification of sampling procedures Compiling notes from meetings or visits for team distribution Performing other related tasks as necessary

Qualifications:

Must be registered or eligible for registration as a Registered Veterinary Technologist in Alberta One to two years of experience in the food animal industry is preferred Extensive poultry production experience (over 5 years) may be considered in lieu of registration
