Role Summary
The Personal Support Worker (PSW) is responsible for delivering personal assistance and homemaking services to clients and their families, adhering to the standards and protocols set forth by VON. The PSW works collaboratively with healthcare professionals to address the needs of clients, promoting their independence and overall well-being.

This role qualifies for a $3.00 per hour wage enhancement from the Ontario Government for all hours dedicated to client care.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Assess and review the client's home environment and care plan to identify necessary adjustments, ensuring the needs of both the client and family are met.
  2. Assist in developing the personal support care plan under the guidance of the Personal Support Program Manager, incorporating input from relevant stakeholders.
  3. Implement modifications to the care plan as directed by the Manager, ensuring safety and compliance.
  4. Communicate any changes in the client's or family's support needs to the appropriate supervisor or Program Manager.
  5. Perform personal support tasks tailored to the client's requirements, which may include light housekeeping, meal preparation, laundry, shopping, and ensuring household safety.
  6. Provide personal care as instructed, assisting clients with mobility, hygiene, and daily living activities.
  7. Deliver basic bedside care under the supervision of nursing staff when necessary.
  8. Offer respite care to clients as needed.
  9. Support families by providing childcare to facilitate relief for caregivers.
  10. Organize daily activities, prioritizing personal support tasks under the direction of the Program Manager or supervisor.
  11. Complete daily check-ins and documentation to ensure efficient operation of personal and home support services.
  12. Evaluate the client's communication patterns and interpersonal skills.
  13. Collaborate with healthcare team members regarding the management of the client's homemaking, physical, and emotional needs, reporting any concerns to the supervisor or Manager.
  14. Adhere to Occupational Health and Safety regulations and VON policies.
  15. Follow VON's risk management protocols to ensure client safety.
  16. Perform additional duties as assigned.
Relationships
  1. Maintain regular communication with the immediate supervisor or Program Manager regarding client plans and pertinent information.
Qualifications
  1. High school diploma required; secondary education preferred.
  2. CCA Certification is mandatory in Nova Scotia.
  3. Certification in Home Support Worker (Levels I, II, III), Personal Support Worker program, or Health Care Aide is required.
  4. Current Standard First Aid and CPR Level C Certification is necessary if applicable.
  5. Experience in household management and working with elderly, ill individuals, or children is beneficial.

  4. Knowledge of community resources.
  5. Capability to work independently or as part of a multidisciplinary team.

  7. Commitment to maintaining confidentiality.
Additional Requirements
  1. Access to a personal vehicle and possession of a valid driver's license and proof of insurance.
  2. Submission of a satisfactory Criminal Records Check.
  3. A Vulnerable Sector Search and/or Child Abuse Registry Check may be necessary.
  4. Flexibility in working hours is essential.
  5. Ability to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as required.
Work Environment: Attention to detail is crucial; physical tasks may include lifting, carrying, bending, pushing, pulling, and other movements as needed.
